Heart Disease: Number-One Killer of Women

Photo of a woman
Most women think cancer is their biggest concern, according to a poll by the American Heart Association (AHA). Yet heart disease claims twice as many lives each year. The AHA says that Hispanic women have high rates of high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes and metabolic syndrome. These conditions put them at risk for heart disease and stroke, which are responsible for 32.2 percent of deaths in Hispanic women.

The condition develops over time. In most cases, arteries become narrower and harder from deposits of cholesterol-rich plaque. When plaque blocks blood flow to the heart, it causes chest pain or a heart attack. A heart attack damages the heart muscle, leaving it weaker. Arrhythmias, or abnormal heartbeats, are another type of heart disease.

Don't be another statistic -- schedule a checkup with your doctor today. Your physician can help you identify lifestyle changes, including diet and exercise, to help you avoid having a heart attack or stroke.
